A good rug is a purchase for years to come, so pay particular attention to pile density. The more tufts and the heavier the material, the more durable, wear-resistant and easy to care for the rug will be.

Marl and patterned rugs show dirt the least, as they hide dust and crumbs well. Among plain colours, greys, beiges, browns and muted greens work best.

Wool is one of the best materials for rugs, although it is fairly expensive. Silk is even more luxurious; thanks to its fine, densely woven fibres, it stands out for its lightness, sheen and exceptionally elegant look.

The rug colour is best matched to the floor, sofa or accessories in the room. Light rugs contrast well with dark floors and make the space look larger, while darker and patterned rugs hide everyday dirt better. A good rug should tie the seating area together and extend around 10–30 cm beyond the sofa on each side. Match it to your lifestyle – a flatweave works well with pets, while a longer-pile model suits a relaxation area – and choose a colour to go with the walls, floor or accessories.

Rugs with a medium weight of 800–900 g/m² work well in living rooms, family rooms and dining rooms.

If you want to make a room cosier and soften the straight lines of the furniture, go for a round rug. A rectangular rug works better if you want to bring order to the space and emphasise the room’s geometry.

A 200x300 cm rug is the best fit for a 160x200 cm bed. This size leaves a comfortable margin at the sides and foot of the bed, so you step straight onto a soft surface when you get up.

A rug should be deep cleaned once a year. The cleaning frequency is best adjusted to how it is used and the conditions at home, to maintain hygiene and extend the life of the material.

To stop a rug moving, it is best to use a non-slip underlay, Velcro strips, gel corner grippers or double-sided tape. Home remedies such as silicone or hot glue can also help.

Flatweave models are thinner, easier to vacuum day to day and better suited to hallways, dining rooms or under a table. The choice depends mainly on the room’s function and the comfort you expect.

Many modern rugs can be used with underfloor heating, especially lower-pile models. Pay attention to the material and thickness of the rug, as a pile that is too thick can reduce heat output. Before buying, it is best to check the technical information for the specific product.
